The answer is in Pulse Management or Heart rate monitoring.

What is pulse management?

Your heart beating causes a pulse. As your heart beats it pumps blood through your arteries. Feel the pulse throbbing by putting your fingers over one of your arteries, such as your wrist, neck, or upper arm.

Pulse measurement is performed to determine the rhythm of your heart rate. Counting your pulse rate is a way to estimate how fast your heart is beating.

Medics and health professionals often conduct pulse rate measurements as part of a physical examination or indeed in an emergency. Not too long ago heart rate monitors were found only in medical establishments and we began to see vending units in pharmacies. Unless we had just jogged into some premises that hosted a heart beat monitor vending system, we wouldn't get the figures we were looking for.

The development of portable lightweight heart rate monitors provided an excellent solution for training endurance athletes, many coaches invested in these new high tech units. Today there are many smaller types of heart rate monitors on the market. Heart rate monitors now come in the guise of wrist watches and pagers, they are manufactured by many famous electronics giants such as Timex, Casio and Oregon Scientific with sports brands including, Cardiosport, Nike, Speedo, Garmin and Polar.

Whether the heart rate monitor is for you or is a gift, the choice needs to be based on two issues;
(1) Your budget
(2) The purpose of the heart rate monitor ( Apart from measuring your pulse. )

The general range of pulse management instruments goes from basic to feature rich, there are entry-level heart rate monitors that will just monitor your pulse, no time keeping nor date function.

It is likely that you may experience 'buyers remorse' when purchasing a basic entry-level heart rate monitor because upon learning and understanding your pulse, you may certainly wish to learn of calories burned and indeed the time you have been exercising, these functions are in the mid range.
