Recognition is important and high achievers expect awards and rewards. Sports winners receive trophies in many forms, from small-personalised cups and tankards to a magnificent team trophy or engrave sports shields.

Winning is about achieving and often the award is the premium incentive. Whilst we might think of the trophy as a big shiny mounted cup, the trophy is the prize. A dream car, luxury holiday or exclusive gift voucher is a trophy.

There has to be a value attached to the award, from both the recipient and the presenters point of view. If a sales representative breaks all previous targets and goals, apart from making the company more money, the rep has more than likely earned higher commissions and has been financially rewarded for that part. Is the money enough?

Some shortsighted bosses might feel it is more than enough but there are mechanical issues here. Lets look at the next day, the week after, the following year … the future. Let's accept the issue that recognition is important, ego's need massaging and tangible evidence is proof of record breaking results.

As a boss, you would like that record broken again. If you were a high achiever in a sales team, you'd like to break that record and take the glory. Is there a mark of recognition in the office? A trophy engraved with that super-salesperson's name is crucial and not only a reminder to the current winner but a target and incentive to the present team.

So, the sales person got commission as a reward and recognition at the office. If that person worked long hours and away from home and family for a long time, what would be nicer than taking home a gift, a beautiful etched crystal decanter or just a funny caricature ornament as a trophy, what would you choose?
